This painting pays homage to the working class and the nostalgia of the
industrial age. The grey tenement houses are uniform in design and are
taken back to basic form, in order to capture the austere times in which
people lived. The workers become iconic figures, symbolising not only the
hardship of labour but also the spirit of the community in which they grew
up and spent all their working lives.
